Feel free to unleash your creativity and tailor it to your dietary preferences or what you have available. What Ingredients Do I Need to Make These Healthy Sloppy Joes in a Bowl?

Crafting these healthy Sloppy Joes requires a handful of simple, wholesome ingredients that are likely staples in your kitchen. We focus on quality components to ensure maximum flavor and nutritional benefits:

  • Ground Beef: Opt for grass-fed ground beef if possible. It provides a richer flavor and superior nutrient profile. You can also use ground turkey or ground chicken for a leaner option.
  • Red Onion: Adds a sweet and pungent aromatic base to the sauce, contributing to its complex flavor.
  • Tomato Paste: Concentrated tomato flavor that adds depth and richness to the sloppy joe sauce.
  • Tomato or Marinara Sauce: Choose a compliant, high-quality brand free from added sugars and undesirable oils. Rao’s Homemade is a popular choice often found at stores like Costco for its clean ingredient list.
  • Coconut Aminos: A fantastic soy-free alternative to soy sauce, offering a savory, umami flavor with a touch of sweetness.
  • Dijon Mustard: Provides a subtle tang and depth that balances the sweetness of the sauce.
  • Hot Sauce: A dash of compliant hot sauce (check labels for sugar and preservatives) adds a gentle kick without overwhelming the other flavors. Adjust to your preferred spice level.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Introduces a crucial acidic note that brightens the entire dish and enhances the savory elements.
  • Minced Garlic: Essential for building a robust flavor base in the sloppy joe mixture.
  • Chili Powder: Adds a smoky, earthy warmth and a mild spice that is characteristic of classic sloppy joes.
  • Sea Salt and Crushed Red Pepper: For seasoning and an optional extra layer of heat.
  • Olive or Avocado Oil: For sautéing, choosing healthy fats is key.
  • Spaghetti Squash: One large or two smaller spaghetti squashes serve as the perfect grain-free, nutrient-rich “noodles” for your bowl.
  • Broccoli Florets: A 16 oz package of fresh broccoli florets will be roasted to tender-crisp perfection as a vibrant, nutritious side.

That’s the beauty of this recipe – it relies on readily available items, meaning you can often whip up this satisfying meal without a special trip to the grocery store. It truly is healthy eating made simple and delicious.

How Do You Bake Spaghetti Squash to Perfection?

Baking spaghetti squash might seem intimidating to some, but it’s remarkably simple to achieve a perfectly tender, noodle-like texture every time. Our tried-and-true oven method ensures your spaghetti squash is cooked through without becoming mushy or watery, providing an ideal base for your Whole30 Sloppy Joes. While Instant Pots or other methods can work, this oven technique consistently delivers excellent results with minimal fuss.

To begin, preheat your oven to a steady 400°F (200°C). The trick to getting longer, more defined strands of “spaghetti” from your squash is how you cut it. Instead of the traditional lengthwise cut, slice the spaghetti squash horizontally into two halves. This exposes more of the long strands, allowing them to cook more evenly and retain their shape. Once cut, use a spoon to scoop out and discard all the seeds and fibrous bits from the center of each half. Place the squash halves cut-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Parchment paper prevents sticking and makes cleanup a breeze. Bake for approximately 35 minutes, or until the skin can be easily pierced with a fork. The exact time may vary slightly depending on the size of your squash. Once baked, allow it to cool slightly before using a fork to gently scrape out the beautiful, pasta-like strands. These naturally sweet and earthy strands are a fantastic, low-carb alternative to traditional noodles, perfectly complementing the savory sloppy joe mixture.

How Do I Roast Broccoli for Optimal Crispness?

Roasting broccoli is one of the simplest and most flavorful ways to prepare this incredibly healthy vegetable. When done right, it transforms from ordinary florets into tender-crisp, slightly charred bites bursting with savory goodness. This method is incredibly straightforward and yields consistently perfect results, making it the ideal accompaniment to your Whole30 Sloppy Joes in a Bowl.

For a 16 oz package of broccoli florets, start by ensuring they are clean and completely dry. Excess moisture can steam the broccoli instead of roasting it, preventing that coveted crispiness. In a large bowl, toss the florets with 1 tablespoon of good quality olive oil. Use your fingertips to really massage the oil into every crevice of the florets, ensuring an even coating. Season generously with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Once seasoned, spread the broccoli out in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Avoid overcrowding the pan; if necessary, use two baking sheets to ensure the broccoli roasts rather than steams. Roast in a preheated oven at a slightly higher temperature of 415°F (215°C) for about 12 minutes. Keep an eye on it towards the end; you’re looking for vibrant green florets with slightly browned, crispy edges. This quick roast yields perfectly tender interiors with a delightful crunch, adding both texture and a boost of nutrients to your meal.

Can I Serve This With Something Other Than Spaghetti Squash?

Absolutely! The beauty of these Whole30 Sloppy Joes is their incredible adaptability. While spaghetti squash provides a delightful “noodle” base, there are numerous other delicious and healthy alternatives to consider, allowing you to customize your meal based on preference or dietary needs.

For a heartier, more comforting option that’s still Whole30 compliant, consider serving the sloppy joe meat over baked sweet potatoes or regular baked potatoes. The creamy texture of a baked potato beautifully contrasts with the rich, savory sauce. You can even explore quick cooking methods like these easy air fryer baked potatoes for a speedy addition. If you’re aiming for a lower-carb profile, zucchini noodles (zoodles), cauliflower rice, or even hearts of palm pasta make excellent substitutes. For a lighter, fresher approach, serve the sloppy joes in crisp lettuce cups or bell pepper boats. The possibilities are truly endless, allowing you to enjoy this flavorful dish in a new way every time.

Can I Use Another Type of Meat in This Recipe?

Yes, certainly! While grass-fed ground beef is our preferred choice for its rich flavor and nutritional benefits in this Sloppy Joes recipe, it’s incredibly versatile and works wonderfully with other ground meats. If you’re looking for a leaner option or simply prefer different proteins, both ground turkey and ground chicken are excellent substitutes. They absorb the robust flavors of the sloppy joe sauce beautifully, creating a equally delicious and satisfying meal.

When using ground turkey or chicken, you might find that they cook a bit faster than beef and are naturally leaner, so you may need to adjust your cooking time slightly and perhaps add a touch more oil if your pan seems too dry. Regardless of your choice, all three types of meat – ground beef, turkey, or chicken – will yield a fantastic result in this easy and healthy sloppy joes recipe, making it a flexible meal for any palate or dietary preference.

Are These Sloppy Joes Keto Friendly?

Yes, absolutely! One of the fantastic aspects of this Whole30 Paleo Sloppy Joes recipe is its inherent compatibility with a ketogenic diet. The flavorful meat mixture itself is naturally low in carbohydrates, focusing on protein and healthy fats. With approximately 25 grams of net carbs per serving, it fits well within many keto daily macros.

To keep the entire meal strictly keto-compliant, the key is your choice of serving base. While we suggest spaghetti squash as a healthy, grain-free option, for a lower-carb alternative, you could easily serve these sloppy joes over zucchini noodles, cauliflower rice, or even hearts of palm pasta. Another popular keto choice is to serve them in large lettuce wraps or bell pepper halves, which provide a fresh, crisp contrast to the rich, savory meat sauce. This flexibility ensures you can enjoy a delicious and satisfying keto meal without compromising on flavor or adhering to strict dietary guidelines.

Can I Freeze Sloppy Joe Meat for Future Meals?

Yes, these Whole30 Sloppy Joes are an excellent candidate for meal prep and freezing! Preparing a larger batch of the sloppy joe meat allows you to save time on future busy weeknights, ensuring a healthy and delicious dinner is always within reach. However, it’s crucial to only freeze the sloppy joe meat portion and not the spaghetti squash or roasted broccoli.

The cooked spaghetti squash and roasted broccoli tend to become watery and lose their desirable texture once frozen and thawed. For the best quality, it’s recommended to cook these components fresh when you’re ready to serve your meal. To freeze the sloppy joe meat, allow it to cool completely after cooking. Then, transfer it to freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags. Be sure to remove as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn. It can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to enjoy, simply thaw the meat overnight in the refrigerator, then reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave. While the meat is reheating, you can quickly prepare fresh spaghetti squash and roasted broccoli, ensuring a perfectly textured and flavorful meal every time.

What Other Wholesome Recipes Can I Make With Ground Beef or Ground Pork?

If you’re a fan of quick, easy, and healthy meals featuring versatile ground meats like beef or pork, you’re in luck! Ground proteins are foundational to countless delicious and simple dishes that are perfect for weeknight dinners or meal prepping. Beyond these fantastic Whole30 Sloppy Joes, here are a few more family-friendly recipes that make excellent use of ground beef or pork:

  • Unstuffed Pepper Skillet: Enjoy all the flavors of classic stuffed bell peppers without the fuss of individual stuffing. This one-pan wonder combines ground meat with colorful bell peppers, rice (or cauliflower rice for low-carb), and a rich tomato sauce.
  • Instant Pot Unstuffed Cabbage Soup: A comforting and hearty soup that captures the essence of traditional stuffed cabbage rolls in an easy, deconstructed form. It’s packed with savory ground meat, tender cabbage, and a flavorful broth, all made quickly in your Instant Pot.
  • Tuscan Spaghetti Squash Casserole: This elegant yet simple casserole combines roasted spaghetti squash with a creamy, savory ground meat mixture infused with sun-dried tomatoes and spinach for a delightful Italian-inspired meal. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy vegetables while staying Whole30 compliant.

These recipes offer diverse flavor profiles and cooking methods, ensuring that your ground meat never gets boring while keeping your meals wholesome and delicious. They are perfect for expanding your repertoire of healthy, family-approved dinners.

A healthier version of your favorite childhood classic. A hearty sweet and savory meat sauce served over spaghetti squash with roasted broccoli. Kid friendly, too!

Ingredients

Sloppy Joes

  • 1 tbsp olive or avocado oil
  • 1 lb grassfed ground beef
  • ½ red onion, diced
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • cup compliant tomato or marinara sauce , I like Rao’s Homemade
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • ¼ cup coconut aminos
  • 1 tbsp dijon or yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ tsp crushed red pepper

Spaghetti Squash

  • 1 large spaghetti squash

Broccoli

  • 1 16 oz package broccoli florets
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ tsp sea salt

Instructions

Spaghetti Squash

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Cut a large spaghetti squash in half horizontally and scoop out the seeds. Place cut side down on a parchment lined baking sheet, and bake for 35 minutes. Use a fork to remove the spaghetti strands and serve with the Sloppy Joe mixture and roasted broccoli.

Sloppy Joes

  • Meanwhile, heat olive or avocado oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add in diced red onion and minced garlic. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened and fragrant. Add in ground beef (or your chosen ground meat) and stir, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, approximately 5 minutes. Drain any excess fat if necessary. Stir in the remaining Sloppy Joe ingredients: tomato paste, compliant tomato or marinara sauce, coconut aminos, dijon mustard, chili powder, sea salt, hot sauce, apple cider vinegar, and crushed red pepper. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Let it simmer, uncovered, for at least 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly. Simmer until ready to serve.

Roasted Broccoli

  • In a large bowl, mix the broccoli florets, 1 tbsp olive oil, and ½ tsp sea salt well with your hands, ensuring every floret is coated. Spread out evenly on a parchment lined baking sheet, avoiding overcrowding. Add to the oven when the spaghetti squash has about 13-14 minutes left of its cooking time (adjusting the oven temperature to 415°F/215°C for the broccoli, if not already at that temperature). Roast until tender-crisp with slightly browned edges. Serve immediately with the Sloppy Joe mixture and spaghetti squash! Enjoy!
