There’s truly nothing that captures the essence of fall, winter, and the holiday season quite like a steaming mug of mulled wine. This delightful concoction is more than just a drink; it’s an experience that awakens the senses, infusing your home with an irresistible aroma and your guests with warmth and good cheer. Imagine a brisk evening, friends and family gathered, and the inviting scent of cinnamon, cloves, and orange wafting through the air – that’s the magic of mulled wine.

My recipe combines a robust red wine with fresh, sweet apple cider, the zesty brightness of orange juice and slices, and a carefully selected medley of warming spices. While I might not be hosting Thanksgiving this year, I’m certainly planning to bring a batch to my in-laws’ house, sharing this wonderful tradition with everyone. This recipe is fantastic as is, offering a beautiful balance of flavors. However, if you’re looking to elevate your mulled wine experience, feel free to add a splash of your favorite brandy or another spirit for an extra layer of depth and warmth.

Effortless Elegance: The Perfect Holiday Party Drink

Hosting can be hectic, but preparing this mulled wine is anything but! It’s the quintessential easy drink for all your holiday gatherings this year, designed to impress without the stress. You can whip it up on the stove top in as little as 15 minutes for a quick infusion of flavor, or let it simmer gently for up to three hours, allowing the spices to deepen and meld beautifully. For ultimate convenience, especially when entertaining a crowd, your slow cooker can handle the job, simmering on low all day. Not only will this free you up to enjoy your guests, but your entire house is guaranteed to fill with an absolutely amazing, welcoming aroma that truly signals the start of the festivities.

Unveiling the Key Ingredients: What Makes Mulled Wine Special

The beauty of mulled wine lies in its simplicity and the quality of its components. Let’s explore the stars of this festive show:

Choosing Your Wine Base

When it comes to the red wine, versatility is key. While you can truly use almost any red wine you enjoy, a dry, fruity, and full-bodied varietal often works best. For this particular batch, I opted for a Cabernet Sauvignon, and the result was superb. Other excellent choices include Merlot, Zinfandel, Grenache, or even a basic table red. There’s no need to reach for your most expensive bottle; the spices and other ingredients will beautifully transform it into something magical. The goal is to choose a wine you’d happily drink on its own, as its character will still shine through. I recently received a monthly delivery from NakedWines.com, which gave me a fantastic variety of reds to experiment with. They partner directly with independent winemakers globally, providing incredible wines at a fraction of retail prices. In fact, they’ve provided a special link for you to get 6 bottles for just $34.99 – an amazing deal compared to the retail price of $113! Simply use code MARYWHOLE50 at checkout. We’ve genuinely loved every bottle we’ve tried from them.

The Sweet & Zesty Companions

  • Fresh Apple Cider: This non-alcoholic component adds a wonderful sweetness and a touch of tartness that complements the wine beautifully. Always check the ingredients to ensure it’s pure apple cider or apple juice for the best, most natural flavor.
  • Maple Syrup: My go-to for sweetness, especially for a vegan option. One tablespoon is usually enough for a subtle sweetness that allows the fruit and spice flavors to shine. However, feel free to adjust to your personal preference – add more if you like your mulled wine on the sweeter side. You can also experiment with other sweeteners like brown sugar or agave nectar.
  • Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice & Orange Slices: Oranges are indispensable in mulled wine. The fresh juice adds vibrant acidity and citrusy notes, while the slices release their oils and visual appeal during the simmering process. Consider adding a few lemon or lime slices for an extra layer of brightness.

The Aromatic Spice Medley

Now, let’s talk about the heart and soul of mulled wine: the spices. Using whole spices is crucial here, as they infuse the drink with a much richer and more nuanced flavor profile than ground spices, which can turn the wine cloudy.

  • Star Anise: This was actually my first time incorporating Star Anise into mulled wine, and I was pleasantly surprised! Its distinctive star shape (as you can see in the pictures) is visually stunning, and it imparts a pungent, licorice-like aroma. While I typically strongly dislike licorice, it gives this mulled wine a unique and utterly delicious flavor that’s not overpowering but rather complex and inviting. I sourced a generous bag of them easily on Amazon.
  • Whole Cloves: These tiny flower buds pack a powerful, warm, and sweet aroma. Their strong flavor means a little goes a long way, but they are essential for that classic mulled wine profile.
  • Cinnamon Sticks: A cornerstone of any spiced drink, cinnamon sticks provide a comforting, woody sweetness that is universally loved. Three to four sticks are perfect for infusing their warm essence without overwhelming the other flavors.
  • Allspice: Often described as tasting like a combination of cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg, allspice adds another layer of warm, earthy complexity that ties all the spice elements together beautifully.

The beauty of mulled wine is its adaptability. Feel free to play around with the fruits and spices! Consider adding a few cardamom pods for an exotic touch, or a couple of fresh ginger slices for a bit of zing. Cranberries and extra apple slices make wonderful garnishes, adding color and a refreshing bite.

The Perfect Presentation: Serving Your Mulled Wine

Serving mulled wine in beautiful mugs truly enhances the experience. I recently discovered these cute mugs on Amazon, and I’m eagerly anticipating using them for all my winter beverages. Garnishing is also key to making your mulled wine visually appealing and extra festive. A simple orange slice, a few fresh cranberries, or an extra cinnamon stick transforms a simple drink into a work of art. For an elegant touch, try adding a star anise pod or even a sprig of fresh rosemary.

Pairing Your Mulled Wine with Holiday Delights

Mulled wine pairs wonderfully with a variety of holiday treats and appetizers. If you’re looking for a crowd-pleasing appetizer that complements its warm flavors, I highly recommend making my Paleo Spinach and Artichoke Dip. Its creamy texture and savory notes provide a delightful contrast to the sweet and spicy wine. Other fantastic pairings include gingerbread cookies, shortbread, cheese boards with seasonal fruits, or even a rich chocolate dessert. The possibilities are endless, making your holiday spread truly memorable.

And remember to please drink responsibly. CHEERS to a wonderful holiday season filled with delicious food and delightful drinks!

Mulled Wine

This Mulled Wine is the perfect festive beverage to serve at all of your holiday gatherings this year! It’s made from a combination of red wine, apple cider, orange juice, and spices. It is gluten-free and vegan.

Ingredients

  • 1 750 ml bottle red wine, I used cabernet sauvignon
  • 1 cup fresh apple cider , check ingredients to ensure it’s just apples/apple juice
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup, more if you like a lot of sweetness
  • ¼ cup fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 3-4 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 4 star anise
  • ½ tsp allspice
  • ½ cup brandy or your other favorite liquor, optional

Instructions

Stove Top Method

  • Add all ingredients to a large pot and heat up over medium heat until just simmering. Do not bring to a boil (this helps preserve the alcohol and the delicate spice flavors!) Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for a minimum of 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. You can simmer for up to 3 hours for a deeper infusion. Serve warm with a slice of orange, apple, cranberries, and a cinnamon stick. Enjoy!

Slow Cooker Instructions

  • For an even more hands-off approach, add all ingredients to a slow cooker. Cook on low for 7-8 hours for a beautifully infused and fragrant mulled wine. If you’re short on time, it can be ready in as little as 2-3 hours on low heat. Keep it on the “warm” setting during your gathering for continuous enjoyment.

Tips for the Perfect Mulled Wine Every Time

  • Do Not Boil: This is perhaps the most crucial tip! Boiling mulled wine will cause the alcohol to evaporate and can make the spices taste bitter. Aim for a gentle simmer, just enough to warm through and allow the flavors to infuse.
  • Taste and Adjust: Everyone has a different preference for sweetness and spice. Start with the recommended amounts, then taste and adjust. Add more maple syrup for extra sweetness, or a pinch more allspice if you prefer a bolder flavor profile.
  • Use Whole Spices: While ground spices might seem convenient, whole spices offer a superior, cleaner flavor and prevent your mulled wine from becoming cloudy or gritty. They also look beautiful floating in the wine.
  • Make Ahead: Mulled wine is an excellent make-ahead beverage. Prepare it a few hours or even a day in advance, then gently reheat on the stove or in the slow cooker before serving. The flavors often deepen and improve with a little time.
  • Strain if Desired: Some people prefer to strain out the spices and fruit before serving for a smoother drink. Others enjoy the visual appeal of the garnishes in each mug. It’s entirely up to your preference.
  • Storage: Leftover mulled wine can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stove over low heat.
